So you’ve mastered joints, bowls, and maybe even the occasional vape, but now you’re staring at a dab rig wondering if you need a chemistry degree to use it.
Good news: you don’t!
Consuming cannabis concentrates with a glass rig is easier than it looks, and once you get the hang of it you’ll understand why so many concentrate lovers swear by it.
First Things First: What Even Is a Dab Rig?
Think of a dab rig as a bong’s cousin. Instead of lighting flower, you’re vaporizing concentrates like wax, badder, shatter, live resin, or rosin.
The little bucket-looking piece attached to the rig is commonly called a banger, this is where the concentrate is placed to be vaporized.
What You'll Need
Dab Rig
A water pipe designed specifically for vaporizing cannabis concentrates, helps to cool and filter the vapor before you inhale.
Quartz Banger
A heat-resistant quartz bucket that attaches to the rig and holds your concentrate while it’s vaporized.
Torch
A butane-powered lighter used to heat the banger to the proper temperature for dabbing.
A dab tool to load your concentrate
A small metal or glass tool used to safely scoop and transfer concentrates into the heated banger.
Your concentrate of choice
A highly potent cannabis extract, such as wax, shatter, badder, or live resin, that contains concentrated cannabinoids and terpenes.
Optional but worth it: Carb cap
A cap placed over the banger during a dab to control airflow, helping concentrates vaporize more efficiently and at lower temperatures.
Step 1: Add Some Water
Fill your rig with enough water to create some bubbling action, but not so much that you’re accidentally drinking it. Nobody wants that.
Step 2: Heat the Banger
Grab your torch and heat the bottom of the banger for about 20–30 seconds. You’re looking to get it nice and hot—not launch-a-space-mission hot.
Step 3: Chill for a Minute
Seriously. This is where most beginners go wrong.
If you dab on a red-hot banger, you’re going to roast your concentrate and probably have a bad experience.
Let the banger cool down for 30–60 seconds before taking your dab. Lower temperatures mean smoother hits and way more cannabis flavor.
Step 4: Drop in Your Dab
Grab your dab tool and scoop up a small amount of concentrate, about the size of a grain of rice for your first time.
Touch it to the inside of the banger while taking a slow inhale.
Step 5: Cap It Off
Place your carb cap over the banger and continue inhaling. The cap helps trap heat and directs airflow, making your concentrate vaporize more efficiently. You can skip this step, but it is recommended to get a better cannabis flavor and more use out of your concentrate.
Step 6: Enjoy the Ride
Take a smooth, steady pull and enjoy. Concentrates can be surprisingly potent, so don’t feel like you need to clear a giant dab to earn your stripes.
A little goes a long way. Always remember: Sip, don’t rip!
Final Thoughts
Dabbing might look intimidating when you’re watching someone wield a torch and a glass rig, but it’s actually pretty simple. Start small, keep your temps low, and focus on enjoying the cannabis flavor.
Before long you’ll be loading dabs like a pro and explaining to your friends why low-temp dabs are the way to go.
