Beyond THC – The Function of Terpenes in Cannabis

Cannabis Industry Health & Wellness

Recently, we explored the wellness potential of the cannabis plant and its versatility in offering a viable self-care option for everyone. In this blog, we’re excited to build on that information and explore a key part of cannabis: terpenes.

Beyond the well-known cannabinoids like THC and CBD, there is a group of fascinating compounds known as terpenes that shape the flavors, aromas, and potentially the therapeutic benefits of cannabis strains.

Follow along as we veer beyond THC and unpack the function of terpenes in cannabis.

First, before we dive into all of the fascinating details regarding the function of terpenes in cannabis, let’s cover the basics. What exactly are terpenes? Well, terpenes are naturally-occurring compounds found within a plant (in the case of cannabis, they are found in the trichomes of female cannabis plants) and give the plant its distinct aroma and flavor.

So, for example: the same compound that gives a mango its tangy sweetness is the same compound that gives the Lemon Cake strain its tangy & sweet flavor.

Now, with that in mind, it’s important to note that terpenes are extraordinarily diverse (there are over 150 different types in cannabis).

Common Cannabis Terpenes

The world of terpenes is as diverse as it is enchanting. Each terpene possesses its own distinct aroma, flavor, and potential effects. Let’s dive into a few of the most common ones and their distinct characteristics:

  1. Myrcene
    • has a sedative effect on users
    • fantastic option for those looking for help with sleep
    • has spicy, earthy and musky scent notes
  2. Limonene
    • helps to soothe anxiety, elevate mood, and soothe acid reflux
    • has fruity and citrusy notes
  3. Pinene
    • anti-inflammatory
    • pain and anxiety relief
    • piney and refreshing
  4. Caryophyllene
    • anti-inflammatory
    • spicy
  5. Linalool
    • antimicrobial
    • sedative
    • think lavender profile but also spicy

Whether you prefer a fruity taste, an herbal bouquet, or a spicy kick, there’s a terpene profile out there to captivate your senses and give you the wellness benefits you’ve been looking for.

We like to view terpenes as the artists of the cannabis world, painting each strain with a unique flavor. They work hand-in-hand with other compounds, such as cannabinoids, to create a masterpiece of effects and experiences.

Now that we’ve gone over what terpenes are, let’s dive into how they work. The most obvious way is by giving us delicious flavor profiles to experience. But, that’s not all!

Terpenes don’t just tantalize our senses — they also play a significant role in the effects we experience when consuming cannabis. They interact with other compounds, such as cannabinoids, in what scientists call the entourage effect.

The entourage effect is similar to the concept of a band. All instruments in a given band are amazing to experience individually, but when you bring them all together, their potency enhances in the presence of the others and creates something really special.

The Therapeutic Potential of Cannabis Terpenes

As we’ve touched on earlier in this blog, terpene research for therapeutic wellness is looking promising. With that being said, we still need to keep in mind that the study of this is still in its early stages.

  • Researchers have taken a look at antiviral properties – and alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, caryophyllene, camphor, and carvone have all shown promise in combating viruses.
  • Researchers are always on the move looking into potential remedies to suppress the many forms of cancer. Limonene has been shown to have an anticancer and antitumor agent. Other terpenes such as pinene, camphor, terpinene, and beta-myrcene were also found to have similar agents.
  • Alpha-bisabolol, geraniol, menthol, eucalyptol, and terpinolene all displayed their ability to fight off antimicrobial resistance agents – goodbye germs!
  • A report found that when terpenes were combined with cannabinoids, they mimicked their effects and amplified the ability to relieve users of pain – say hello to relief.
